Constipation

A MyLymphomaTeam Member asked a question 💭
Poconos, PA

Has anyone experienced this to the extreme? My husband is really suffering. Stool softeners, laxatives and added fiber aren't helping.

Members rallied around someone whose husband was struggling with severe chemotherapy-related constipation, with the most consistently recommended solutions being Miralax (often mixed with water at bedtime), Colace as a daily preventive stool softener, and Dulcolax in reduced doses to avoid harsh diarrhea afterward. Several members emphasized that drinking six to eight glasses of water daily is absolutely essential for any fiber or laxative to work effectively, with some finding warm or hot water especially helpful during the week after treatment, while others suggested adding vegetables, Senna tea, or a prescription like Linzess when over-the-counter options fail. A recurring theme was the frustrating cycle of side effects, where drinking enough water to relieve constipation can make it hard to eat, and the importance of working closely with an oncologist to find the right combination and timing of treatments that works for each individual.

Have your husband drink at least 6 to eight glasses of water every day. It is hard to drink that much but my husband got used to it. Miralax also works very well. Mix a capful with a glass of water in the evening. It works very well. He may have to do this every day or at least every other day. You can ask the doctor. If you do not drink enough water while increasing fiber intake, your husband may become more backed up.

ducolax worked for me. I took the 'full dose' the first time and it worked, but I diarrhea for a couple of days after. Second time it happened - took half dose at bedtime - worked in the morning - been fine since. I would contact your Onc if this isn't working.

Katie2,
That's exactly how I felt during my first cycle of chemo - that one problem (or attempt to fix it) leads to another. My personal experience is that it takes one or two cycles to get the knack of it in terms of doses and timing, i. e. what to do when. It was all rather overwhelming at first, I found.
Keeping my fingers crossed for you and your husband that something finally works!

As for the water, it really does help, but I might add that hot, or at least warm, water helps (me) even better, esp. during the week after chemo treatment.
During that first week in particular, I've made it a habit to drink warm/hot water with every meal (and lots in between).
Taking a laxative (Movicol) every morning for the first 4 days of each cycle also helped, though it's a European product so it may not be available in the US.
