Feeling overwhelmed in public places during lymphoma treatment is completely understandable. Treatment can affect your energy levels, mental clarity, and emotional resilience — making busy or stimulating environments feel like a lot to handle.
Here are some ways to manage this:
- Limit exposure gradually — Start with quieter, less crowded places like a library or small museum to ease back into public spaces
- Bring a support person — Having a trusted friend or family member with you can make outings feel safer and less overwhelming
- Plan around your energy — Go out during off-peak hours when places are less busy
- Practice deep breathing — Slow, steady breaths can help calm your nervous system in the moment
- Give yourself permission to leave — It's okay to cut an outing short if it becomes too much It's also worth mentioning this to your care team. What feels like sensory overwhelm can sometimes be linked to treatment side effects like "chemo brain" or fatigue. A MyLymphomaTeam member noted, "The more stress, the worse the neuropathy and chemo brain."
A therapist or counselor familiar with lymphoma can also offer coping strategies tailored to what you're going through. You don't have to push through this alone.

Donna-You are still at a time where your body may get tired easily. Give yourself some grace and get the rest you need. Getting out of the house helps us mentally but being in a large store like Walmart can be exhausting. Your body has been through a lot. Maybe if you go to Walmart again, use one of their motorized carts. It may help. I get exhausted going to Walmart and I’m 19 years out from treatment. I’m also that much older. Sending hugs and caring thoughts🩷
