Is Anyone Working With Integrative Medicine To Help With Traditional Treatment, E.g. Ayurveda Or Immune-support Items
A MyLymphomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

My oncologist provides the chemo treatment but not any additional immune-supporting type of modalities to compliment and/or deal with the various side-effects of the R-CHOP plan. I am seeking an integrative MD to help me out with a more holistic approach to getting me through treatment and helping me post-treatment to heal the body

Don't get too deep in the weeds and cause yourself additional stress over diet and holistic treatments. Rule one, do what your doctor recommends. Rule two, eat a normal healthy diet with lots of fruits, vegetables, proteins etc. I would be willing to bet that the cancer center you are going to has a nutritionist who can guide you on the best diet for you and your condition. I have not yet heard of some miracle diet cure for NHL. Stay on your treatments, eat a proper diet, try and get enough exercise and rest. Prayer and believing you will get through this and maintain a good attitude is the best thing you can do for yourself. I went through three types of chemo the last of which was O-CHOP. After chemo I was referred for a clinical trial of CAR-T with a prognosis of two months to live if the treatment did not work, it did and six weeks after treatment I was pronounced cancer free. Last week I had my twenty two month CT and check up and I am totally cancer free and they do not believe it will ever come back...

I am amazed at the treatments that are available and the new ones that are coming out daily. More than the treatments I strongly believe in the power of prayer and faith. I had lots of people praying for me (and still do). I am still hear regardless of some really bad diagnosis from some doctors. When I would get a negative word from the doctors I would bypass it in my mind and not accept the negatives and just believe I would get past it all. I did, with the help of God and you can also.

Thanks Nanci! Ugh! To the doctor who exclaimed, "we give the chemo and immunotherapy like candy around here!" This would make my skin crawl. As patients we have right to ask for another oncologist and/or doctor to help us - we have that right! If a doctor doesn't feel right and I always say listen to your intuition, then that doctor isn't the correct choice. I ask upfront how do you feel regarding holistic/integrative medicine? I asked my hem/oncologist this and fortunately she is but I needed to ask her. She said that I was different than most of the patient population and I am assuming she meant that this population isn't interested or knowledgable regarding holistic medicine. I have no symptoms but I did have a bone marrow test as the type of lymphoma I have does impact the bone marrow. I have 5% in my bone marrow which is a low patient load. I don't know why some folks get lymphoma and some don't? My doc said I have had Nodal Marginal Zone Lymphoma and probably have had this for decades which was very surprising.
Perhaps trauma contributes to lymphoma or merely aging and cells changing and mutating (mine isn't genetic) nor energy blocks, or luck of the draw ....I do rely on my higher power and this uplifts me. A lot of people have chronic conditions and now I have one that will need to be managed for the rest of my life - unless the lymphocytes become smaller and smaller and turn into little white lights and disappear....

I am not sure how popular this response will be on this site but here goes... I live in Florida and medical marijuana is legal with a compassionate use card. I am not a big fan of recreational marijuana but medical does have its benefits. I went through a few cycles of O-CHOP (Obinitusimab) vs (Retuximab) slight difference but they had already determined that Retuximab did not work on me. Marijuana allows you to sleep even with Predizone (Which I truly hate). I had no nausea through the entire treatment and was able to relax and get sleep. My doctor was aware I was using it and did not have any issues with it and said it would not impact the treatment. I was using extracts and concentrates instead of smoking or vaping. Ask your doctor, maybe this could work for you. If I am not supposed to make comments on the use of marijuana I apologize to the group but I have not seen it mentioned elsewhere. I am not recommending you try it, only recommending you should speak to your doctor before doing anything that may impact your treatment.

Robert, I agree the power of prayer is the most important factor in your treatment. Faith has so much healing. You give great advice and I'm so glad you are cancer free. Blessings continued upon you.

Hi Nanci,
I recently was diagnosed with Marginal Zone Nodal Lymphoma and I have no symptoms at all! My axillary lymph nodes (armpits) were slightly enlarged on a mammogram. I personally believe in both traditional and holistic/integrative medicine. The key for me is finding a traditional doctor who of course will have formal education but is also intuitive and I believe intuition is vital in a doctor. Fortunately, I lucked out because my hem/oncologist doctor I immediately liked. She was low key and recommended active monitoring since I am asymptomatic. I did ask her what her belief was regarding supplements (test question here) and her response was she definitely does believe especially in vitamin D (the higher the better and my level is 70) and she did test my D. Magnesium Citrate, CoQ10 and vitamin C for starters she also recommended. She also recommended Reiki along with other holistic modalities. Where I live in Chapel Hill and go to Duke there is a Duke Integrative Clinic which is a wonderful adjunct along with traditional medicine.
Again, the key to me is to find a good fit in terms of an oncologist and medical doctor. I firmly believe you need to be your own advocate and be able to say "no" to anything one doesn't want to do! I used to work in the medical field so I have no problem advocating for myself and saying "no" to things I don't want to do. It really does come down to personal choice but I say do the homework first and some research and ask questions. I also believe in the power of prayer and trust. Most importantly to me is working out - I tend to really like cardio but also weights and yoga, being outdoors and I want to get back into riding horses. Swimming, walking, anything that gets me moving and out of my head. I have always liked to exercise and engage with yoga. I do feel being open minded and having a creative spirit is important - I am an artist and this is an important vehicle for me with any type of healing. Through the process of creating, we are creating a "new norm" and for me this was vital to my life. Ten years ago I experienced the death of one of my sons and at some point I had to ask myself "how do I want to live the rest of my life?" Certainly not immersed in grief, feeling at a dead end road, depressed, withdrawn, so forth and this too, was a new norm. Here I am again back in the saddle - resilience is at the heart of it all. Being able to create was transformative and healing.
