How Much Does The Immune System Suffer From Maintenance Therapy (in My Case Gazyvaro Every Two Months)
A MyLymphomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

My oncologist says the usual procedure after completing the final round of chemo/immuno therapy (which I did yesterday, hurray! ) was to continue with immuno therapy infusions every 2 months for 2 years. He also said the immune system would get compromised by the therapy and that it was my decision, esp. with Covid and other (respiratory) diseases still around, if I really wanted to go through with it.

He didn't specify (and I forgot to ask) just how MUCH it will suffer and how careful I will… read more

That's a great question Anne6. Here's what happened to me. Same plan, I finished Chemo and was put on 2 years of maintenance therapy, with Rituxan infusions every two months. I tolerated Chemo just fine and thought I would have the same experience with maintenance Rx. But, the drug compromised my immune system further and my white blood cell counts fell to dangerously low levels. So, my doctor took me off Rituxan and gave me an infusion of Immune Globulin (IG). IG is supposed to boost your immune system to bring up those numbers. But, before the IG could help much, I attended an out of state wedding for my grandson and contracted Covid. Due to my compromised immune system, it took me over four months to resolve what was termed a resistant infection. My immune system was just not strong enough to fight Covid. My symptoms were only mild, but it just wouldn't go away. Of course, when you have Covid, you can't get in to have any infusions. Finally, they had a isolation room available and I was able to get another Immune Globulin infusion (7 to 8 hours by the way ). This helped to finally get over Covid and have negative Covid tests. Now I'm back on IG one month and Rituxan the next month. Early to tell but it seems to be working. You might ask your oncologist if Immune Globulin could be a back up plan if your white blood cell count drops too low. In addition, watch the Abs. neutrophil and Abs. Lymphocyte numbers. Sorry for the long response, but hopefully good information from my experience.

Blessings...............Ron

Any medication that impacts b cells impacts immunity - this was clearly demonstrated during covid. https://news.cancerconnect.com/treatment-care/b... Best C

Just finished my maintenance therapy of two years I experienced no side effects. The doctors are not sure how long it takes for your immunity to come back. Could be six months to a year. I received a drug called Rituxan Hycela every other month. They injected 13 cc subq into my abdomen over five minutes and I would be on my way. They also give me injections of a drug called Evusheld every six months for protection from Covid. Hope this helps answer some of your questions.

I had Evushield twice, caught covid once but it was very mild after spending hours on a plane with the lady in the middle coughing the entire flight. My Dr. says don't bother with more Evushield.

I am using both allopathic treatments and natural supports through a naturopathic oncology specialist clinic.and am trying Shark Liver Oil to address neutrophils. In Canada, or at least where I live, the data on Evushield doesn't support it being part of the virus protection protocol for oncology patients so it's a bit of a concern.
