Shingles Vaccine? Yay Or Nay?
A MyLymphomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

Any thoughts on whether those of us with lymphoma should get the shingles vaccine? My oncologist today told me I should get it. I've been pretty die-hard about not introducing toxins into my body....and I'm thinking that is another one. But he said getting shingles would really be hard on my body with the lymphoma.

I have had shingles twice. I just put off getting the vaccine. After lymphoma diagnosis, I received the vaccine. Feel better about it. The vaccine is sooo much better than having shingles. Follow the advice of your oncologist, for heaven’s sake!

Personally I would go for it, I had shingles a couple of years ago, it effected my right eye, in effect my only eye that functions adequately, I was under the eye hospital as an urgent case initially then had ongoing treatment for a year was unable to drive as I could not see adequately, thankfully after treatment and cataract surgery I can now see well, but the shingles itself was horrendous, painful and itchy the pain was intense and had lesions all around the right side of my face which thankfully have now cleared up. Obviously I appreciate you not liking the idea of toxins in your body but it would hopefully help you prevent a very nasty and painful illness that can leave you with a multitude of health issues on top of what your body is dealing with. Hope you find the right decision for yourself. Regards Gillian.

As a nurse (retired now), I saw how terribly patients suffered from shingles. I had the original shingles vaccine about 15years ago. It is not as effective or long lasting as the Shingrex. After CAR-T cell therapy I have had to get all vaccines, including childhood vaccines, again. I have had the first Shingrex with only a sore arm and will soon get the second. Even if I had a worse reaction, it would be preferable to having shingles. The pain from shingles is excruciating and can last for weeks or even months.
