Thanks, Rebecca. My situation is a bit different from yours in that the chemo puts me at risk for post-treatment infection/disease. Thus I got some general advice to avoid anything raw; sushi, rare meats, raw/uncooked vegetables, salads, sprouts, fruits that can’t be washed and peeled. etc. Can’t even munch on a raw carrot!
Just wondering if anyone else found themselves with similar restrictions.

You can't blanch a carrot and then peel it and get the flavor and semi "crunch" you seek? :-)

But now I understand what you are saying about restrictions - it was different than what I thought. Thanks. I hope that you find other ways to get to the foods you want and of course, that you successfully complete chemo and are in remission. Sending you prayers and lots of good vibes.

I don't want to sound like a smart alec but here is my answer. Anything that does not help you, should be set aside (even if someone you trust says it's the best). Everybody is different.

I did not have chemo but I did have an obstruction that caused GI problems and then a big sx that altered my innards forever. What the Drs told me and what I experienced was often not the same. I learned to listen to my body. Eat and drink as healthy and organically as possible. Your tastes and body's reactions to things can change (and keep changing), you need nutrients and calories to help your body heal. I went to a nutritionist thru my GI who was a nice lady with some good basic generic advice - but was very main stream and much of it simply did not work for me. I did learn that I needed to make a big effort to increase my protein intake. (I learned that protein drinks and powders of most shapes and sizes while good in theory just made my GI mad. Live and learn.) I do a lot of homemade soups and smoothies now because I can control the ingredients. Reading labels and learning what works and doesn't is key. Best of luck to you!

Dairy and I don't get along so well anymore. I still have butter and cheese but much less and less frequently. I use nut milks as substitutes and coconut milk in my coffee. When my GI was at it's worst with frequent UTIs and general infections, the ABTs they wanted me to take made things much worse. My GI suggested yogurt with probiotics - there is quite a variety of non dairy ones (you will have to find the ones that you like the taste and texture). But they did help me get my messed up innards to a better place. I also learned to soak chia seeds in water and add those and ground flax seed to my oatmeal. Helps with the protein and keeping you regular.

I was told not to eat raw foods such as sushi, or soft eggs. Until my current GI issues developed, I ate lots of salads(just was told to avoid the high potassium foods such as nightshades, melons almonds and peanuts) and to always wash the vegetables well. But with the GI issues causing a big loss of fluids and potassium, I was told to eat those other foods along with my potassium medications and to peel and cook my veggies now. And to reduce the use of seeds/nuts. Getting enough protein is difficult as well and they have had me on 2 protein drinks a day along with adding (I’ve been plant based for several years) a little animal protein like chicken breasts, fresh fish, but avoid the “red meat/pork” due to the high fat contents.
It’s a try it and see if this is helpful or not with the nutritional info.
I find I do get a little upset stomach from the protein drink.. they seem to be too sweet. I drink a plant based version and regular milk products seem to have irritating side effects for me as well. Rice milk, cashew based yogurt and kieffer (Forager products ) work very well for my system! Trial and error., good luck 🍀
