Deena, I did not gain weight. I thought I would, but managed to maintain my weight (within 5 pounds). There was a steroid included in my pre-treatment, (before the chemo drip started), so it probably wasn't a substantial amount. I noticed quite a bit of puffiness, especially in my face, eyelids and fingers and that was attributed to this steroid, but after the 3rd or 4th day, that went away. My oncologist mentioned that most all chemotherapy patients do gain some weight throughout treatment. I slept a lot and found that I wasn't really hungry, and if I wasn't hungry, I just didn't eat. This was not the best thing to do because I found myself really weak at times. Take care of yourself, eat as healthy as possible and you'll be fine!

Will chemotherapy for lymphoma cause weight gain?
Weight changes during chemotherapy can go either way. Some people experience weight loss due to side effects like nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, or changes in taste. Others may gain weight, especially if prescribed corticosteroids (steroids) as part of their treatment regimen.
Steroids are commonly included in many lymphoma chemotherapy protocols and can increase appetite and cause fluid retention, leading to weight gain. A MyLymphomaTeam member shared: "I really think my biggest enemy most days is the steroids. Has anyone gained a lot of weight and lost it after remission?"
If weight gain occurs, members have found success with strategies like:
- Eating smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day
- Reducing soft drinks and sweets
- Focusing on nutrient-dense foods rather than empty calories
The good news is that weight gained during treatment can often be lost after completing therapy. Working with your healthcare team or a registered dietitian can help you manage your weight and nutrition throughout treatment.
