How Best To Deal With The Anxiety Of An Upcoming PET Scan After Being In Remission?
A MyLymphomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

Been in remission since May and have been having stomach pain that was believed to be a hernia until ultrasound showed there wasn’t one. Now have to go back for another PET scan because of a swollen liver and spleen. I’m having severe anxiety over the whole situation. I don’t want to do this again.

Hi Mark, I understand your anxiety but in my opinion Pet scans are the most complete check up we can have. I was originally diagnosed in 2019 and had a low dose of targeted radiation then. Over the last year I kept telling my drs I thought something was going on again as I was more fatigued and shortness of breath issues. My blood work is great so they were not thinking it was back.. They sent me for a scan a few weeks ago and yup I have 3 more spots one on my spleen and below it are new areas. Without the Pet I would have been googling non stop. Anyways I’m heading for chemo in 2 weeks and as scary as that is I am grateful we are heading towards a treatment that should kick this in the butt. So hang in there I’m sure you will have a good plan put in place vs cancer growing .

Hey Mark PET scans are terrific. They are definitive and allow you to meet your disease head on and understand it after which you can do whatever it takes to defeat it. I’ve had lymphoma for over 7 years now. I’ve had all the chemo series plus a cancer pill for 7 months and a clinical trial. Most recently CAR-T therapy ( 11 months ago) and am currently in remission. Attitude is everything ( as my wife admonishes me) so pick a good one and go for it! All the best Blair

Mark as a patient in remission you will find yourself with wondering if every pain is cancer reoccurring. If anxiety helped I would say go for it. You can choose to worry or choose to move on with life. The outcome will be the same. If you are not determined to live you best life always what’s the point. You will continually keep you and others upset changing nothing. If it’s back they have many more ways to solve new problems. I met some people who have been in remission 10 times and still enjoying life. I suggest you read Cancer, Stress, Mindset and start practicing Qigong a form of healing Tai Chi. Dig deep into it. It is a Godsend. Qigong is also available at Amazon.

There is always a place for anxiety. If anxiety could cure, solve a condition I would say revel in it. Instead it feeds stress and saps strength. Whether something is there or not will always be in question now that you have experienced cancer. Please study how to change your mindset. A great book is Cancer, Stress and Mindset. Your mind can make you ill. It can make Placebos work. After reading start with Qigong. Concentrate on how to win in your struggle, get excercise each day no matter how small. Lots of Protein from protein drinks ( they do not all taste alike-shop around). Anxiety is pointless the things listed are not. Everyone needs to live your best life everyday not waste time worrying. Take constructive steps every day.

Stress can start the Cancer again. A Pet scan is painless test that is going to tell you what more and how much more you might need. Do something positive, exercise, drink more Protein drinks, journal, Yoga, Qigong.
