Recent research has shown that Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia (WM) involves abnormal B-cells producing excessive amounts of IgM proteins. These proteins accumulate in the blood, causing it to thicken and slow circulation, which can lead to various complications.

A significant finding is that mutations in the MYD88 gene may contribute to the development of WM. This genetic component helps explain why the condition develops and could potentially lead to more targeted treatments. The impact of IgM levels has become better understood - higher IgM levels are now associated with poorer outcomes. This has led to the development of the International Prognostic Scoring System for Waldenstrom Macroglobulinemia (ISSWM), which helps healthcare teams better predict disease progression and plan appropriate treatments.
