Double-hit lymphoma (DHL) in DLBCL tends to have a more challenging prognosis compared to standard DLBCL. The genetic mutations involving MYC and BCL2 genes can lead to a more aggressive cancer that's harder to treat.
A 2014 study showed that after two years, 50 percent of people with DHL were still alive, and of these, 40 percent had not shown signs of disease progression. This is generally lower than the survival rates for standard DLBCL, which has a five-year survival rate of about 65 percent.
DHL is often refractory, meaning it may not respond as well to initial treatment. Even when there's an initial response, the cancer often relapses and returns. Due to its aggressive nature, people diagnosed with DHL typically require intensive treatment regimens.
