I'm a FL patient currently on watchful waiting and have not had CA treatments yet. My oncologist has discussed that treatment should start soon. While waiting, I've learned that supportive measures like gentle exercise, movement, soaking baths, and symptom management can make a meaningful difference in how I feel day to day. I'm interested in whether oncologist are helping patients proactively strengthen their bodies and manage symptoms before treatment begins, especially for those who may not… read more

It seems that if you are over weight, or obviously not physically fit, the oncologist should be talking more with their patients about preparing for the impact the treatments will have on your body. Mine is not. I am preparing myself, but have to say, if I had more support, someone to talk to without feeling like a burden to my immediate family, it would be nice. I have asked my oncologist, who like the idea of the additional support, but never offer the referral. I'm on my 3rd oncologist. (due to location, not because I did not like the doctors) but none were responsive to my suggestions. My primary care doctor is actually the one who told me in the beginning to strengthen up and prepare. I just feel like I would be further along in my physical fitness if I had had more support.

Are oncologists offering supportive care during watchful waiting for follicular lymphoma to prepare for future treatments?

While watchful waiting is a common approach for follicular lymphoma, the focus is typically on monitoring rather than proactive preparation. However, lifestyle changes during this period can significantly improve your overall health and well-being.

Making healthy changes now can help you feel better and potentially strengthen your body before treatment begins. Consider these supportive measures:

* Eating a nutritious, healthy diet
* Exercising regularly (even gentle movement counts)
* Quitting smoking if applicable
* Managing other health conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes

These lifestyle modifications can improve your outlook and help you face treatment with a healthier body. If you smoke, quitting may help reduce side effects and complications from future cancer treatment and speed recovery.

It's worth having a direct conversation with your oncologist about referrals to supportive care specialists like physical therapists or nutritionists. Not all providers automatically offer these referrals during watchful waiting, but many will if you express interest in taking a whole-person approach to your care.

Following your treatment plan, attending all appointments, and staying on top of your overall health are important steps you can control during this time.
