Colorectal lymphoma is notoriously tricky to detect. Its symptoms are very general and can easily be mistaken for other gut-related issues. Many people aren't actually diagnosed until something more urgent happens, like a bowel obstruction or bleeding, which then leads to further investigation. There are a few reasons why it may only be showing up now:
- It's rare — colorectal lymphoma makes up only 0.2% to 1% of all colon cancers, so it's not always the first thing doctors look for
- It can develop over time — lymphoma may not have been present or visible in earlier colonoscopies
- It can look like other conditions — making it easy to overlook without a biopsy
The important thing now is that it has been found. Early detection, even if it feels late, still opens up meaningful treatment options. Talking with your care team about next steps, including staging and treatment planning, is the best place to start.
