If I obsess over my cancer it controls my life and I've lost myself to the disease. Mental health is an important aspect of cancer treatment. How do you safeguard yourself against this obsessing? One way is by doing things that take your mind off the cancer. For example: Hobbies can be a good way to live life with cancer without letting the cancer take over. So, the real question is: How do YOU care for your mental health?

Members reflected deeply on how they safeguard their mental health while living with cancer, with faith, spirituality, and connection to God emerging as foundational anchors for many who described their mental well-being as inseparable from their spiritual lives. Several members shared practical strategies that help them stay grounded, including staying busy with hobbies like woodworking, cooking, and collecting, volunteering at churches and community organizations, spending time with rescue pets, maintaining gratitude lists, meditating, and binge-watching favorite shows. A recurring theme was the healing power of service and focusing outward on others rather than inward on fear, with members emphasizing that giving love, praying for others, and finding purpose in helping people through their struggles brings joy back and keeps cancer from taking over their identity.

When I was first diagnosed, I wanted to make sure that I wasn't dealing with depression as well. I continued many of the things I had been doing: meditating, praying, walking, talking with friends and family, and listening to music. I have been surprisingly happy during my treatment! Also, I have been keeping a gratitude list since 1997 and I continue to write at least 5 things that I am grateful for everyday.

I agree with all these suggestions but feel a very important one has been left off. It is service to others. I volunteer at my church, a retreat center and with an art group. It is important to give of yourself to others in need. Even when mobility is difficult you can correspond with people and make phone calls letting everyone know that they are important. Too much focus on your own issues only makes them worse and increases fear. Spread Joy and it comes back twofoldπŸ’•

That's great. Keeping things as normal as possible is important. I remember that I thought I'd go nutz without a work schedule so I made up a faux schedule just to keep my sanity. It worked! Or maybe I went nutz and just don't know it, lol
