What should you do about a very low white blood cell count 8 days after your third R-CHOP round?

Low white blood cell counts are a common side effect of R-CHOP treatment. This happens because the chemotherapy affects all types of blood cells, including the white blood cells that help your body fight infections.

When your white blood cell level gets too low, you're at higher risk for infection. Watch for these symptoms:

* Fever
* Aches and chills
* Generally feeling ill
* Headaches

Contact your health care team right away if you develop any of these symptoms, especially a fever above 100.4°F. They can assess whether you need medical attention or additional treatment to help your body recover.

The growth factor shot you received (likely to boost white blood cell production) should help, but it takes time to work. Your medical team may want to check your blood counts again to monitor your recovery.

In the meantime, take extra precautions to avoid infections - wash your hands frequently, avoid crowds and sick people, and follow any specific instructions your care team has given you.
